Black boy, fly! is a powerful book for young boys designed to encourage them to be unapologetic about their identity, history, and giftedness. Fly with MJ as he defies societal stereotypes in this beautifully illustrated and fun family read, a touching story, perfect for encouraging boys to soar. Bonus material includes 100 inspiring affirmations young boys can repeat with their parents and teachers to reinforce self-esteem and confidence.

Why was it important for you to write this story?

I wrote this book as a love letter to my son, Amani, and to Black and Brown boys across the diaspora. The percentage of inspirational children’s books featuring Black and Brown boys is so limited and I wanted to be a part of the change to diversify children’s book literature. My son is 21 and these sort of books didn’t exist when he was a child.

Describe your writing process or writing schedule.

Once I get an idea for a book, I typically write it down wherever I am with whatever I have (phone, journal, computer, etc.). I then give myself a week to make revisions before sending it to my editor, Candice L. Davis. After making revisions with Candice, it heads to the illustrator. It usually takes about 3 months to complete from first draft to publish.

Who is your favorite black author and how has that author inspired your writing journey?

It’s so hard to narrow this down one author. I grew up reading Assata Shakur, Alice Walker, Chinua Achebe, Toni Morrison, Maya Angelou, Virginia Hamilton, among others. However, my favorite Black author is Zora Neale Hurston. Their Eyes Were Watching GOD inspired me in a way which made me feel compelled to write. I feel blessed to be able to call myself an author and hope to be listed amongst the greats some day.

What words of advice do you have for aspiring authors?

Write wherever you are and with whatever you have.

What has been the most challenging part of the writing or publishing journey?

When I published my first book, The Mindfulness Room, I didn’t fully understand the business of being an indie author or how marketing works. As I’ve invested in courses, mentorship from my editor, and researched more about the business aspect I feel like I’m in a much better position to move forward in my journey to become a full-time author.

What is next on your journey and how can we support your book?

Right now Black boy, fly! is in the pre-sale stage on Amazon and I’m super excited to get closer to the release date. I’m also releasing a line of dolls and a subscription box rooted in mindfulness geared to Black and Brown children and families. You can follow my journey on my IG page at @_themindfulnessroom
