Thanks so much for giving the book lovers at Autherine Publishing an opportunity to get to know your story.

Please introduce your latest book to our audience.

"Future Miss President" was inspired by the Historic Election of the First Female and Black Vice President, Kamala Harris. It is sure to inspire children of all ages to pursue their highest and best dreams! A young girl learns that the new VP is just like her and has to overcome her self-doubts and is able to ignite her inner dreamer to reach for the stars!

Why was it important for you to write this story?

I was so inspired by this Historic Election that I had to find a way to encourage children everywhere to dream BIG! It is important to me as a Girl Mom to produce books that our children can relate to, be inspired by, and the world can come to see positive Black imagery in literature.

Describe your writing process or writing schedule.

My process is very organic. I begin with an idea and then write it out on paper. Secondly, I type it up on my computer and begin the editing process. While creating the story, I draft rough sketches of each page and what I would like the illustrations to convey. I write whenever inspiration strikes me and also try to create on a regular basis to keep my creativity fresh and flowing. With 3 children, I tend to write very early in the morning hours before they awaken for the day.

Who is your favorite black author and how has that author inspired your writing journey?

I have many favorite black authors, Kimberla Lawson Roby, Terry McMillan, Eric Jerome Dickey, Vashti Harrison and more. I am an avid reader, and read many books for pleasure. I would rather read a good book than watch TV, honestly. I also spend a lot of time reading with and to our children. Reading is a favorite hobby in our family. Each Author has inspired me to find my own voice and create stories that are important to me and feel right for my brand.

What words of advice do you have for aspiring authors?

I would recommend writing about a topic or genre that you really love! Writing is very hard work and to put your creative work out for public fodder can be heart-wrenching. I would suggest you find your voice and use it to create a brand that will be long-lasting. Connect with your readers and form a community with like-minded Authors who share your passion for writing. You will have ups and downs, but remember why you began and stick with your Business Plan and you will stay on track! Always stay true to yourself and you can't go wrong! Lastly, get excellent and thorough editing and wonderful illustrations for your projects.

What has been the most challenging part of the writing or publishing journey?

For me personally, I chose to self-publish. This was a big learning curve for me, but also a very exciting journey of discovering a new opportunity to be creative. I had to learn, research, invest and adjust as needed along the way. It was a challenging feat that has resulted in a book I am extremely proud of and that has been very well received!

What is next on your journey and how can we support your book?

I am currently in the illustration phase of my next book which will feature a little boy who learns how to step outside of his box and develop a growth mindset. I am also creating a companion book to go alongside "Future Miss President!" Stay tuned for more Children's books to come! The paperback book is on it's third printing run and is available for Pre-Sale at srdharrisbooks.com. The e-book version of "Future Miss President" (Free on Kindle Unlimited) is available on Amazon at http://amzn.to/3nEpBxr.
