Autherine Publishing is committed to creating more diversity in the publishing industry by supporting both emerging and established authors. In honor of Black History Month, we are amplifying the voices of black authors by featuring 28 emerging authors. Please read their stories and continue to follow their writing journey.

Dezi, thanks for stepping into our Black History Month Author Spotlight. Congratulations on becoming a #1 Amazon Best Seller! Please tell us about your book.

The title of my book is Cassidy and the Mixed Up Numbers. It follows a little girl starting her first day of kindergarten at a new school. We watch as she overcomes being nervous about the other children learning she has a learning disability called dyscalculia.

Why was it important for you to write this book?

As a child school was pretty rough for me. At the age of 22, I found out I had a learning disability and that diagnosis changed my life. It opened the door for me to return to college after dropping out a few years earlier. When I returned to college, I had a new set of tools to help me succeed. Now I create stories for neurodiverse children that promote confidence and resilience.

Describe your writing process or writing schedule?

I try to write everyday even if it's for 30 minutes and I can't do it unless, I have on my favorite writing hat.

Who is your favorite black author and how has that author inspired your writing journey?

If I have to choose one, I would say Chinua Achebe I can remember reading Things Fall Apart in tenth grade and being amazed by his ability to tell a story.

Share a quote from your book or your favorite black history quote?

I think its fitting that I share a quote from Chinua Achebe, "The writer can not expect to be excused from the task of re-education and re-generation that must be done. In fact, he should march right in front".

What words of advice do you have for aspiring authors?

To keep a notepad by your bedside because inspiration hits even when its bedtime.

What has been the most challenging part of the writing or publishing journey?

In the beginning of my journey, I was a one woman show. However, now I have a team of people that support me in this journey.

What is next on your journey and how can we support your book?

The next step for me is my March release of my new book. I hope that people will continue to enjoy Cassidy and the Mixed Up Numbers and, are equally as excited about my new release.
