Black History Month Author Spotlight: Shayla McGhee
I am so excited that you and Payton are on this writing journey together! Please tell us about Payton Goes to London.
Payton is a bright and energetic six-year-old that is taking her first trip to London, England. Follow her and her family as they visit popular London landmarks such as the London Eye, Tower Bridge, and Big Ben. A perfect travel book for kids and the first in a globetrotting series, Payton’s adventure will ignite your child's curiosity about visiting different countries around the world and the popular sights to see while there.
Why was it important for you to write this story?
We wrote Payton Goes to London to build curiosity for travel among young children, increase the number of black characters in books, and inspire other families to explore the world with their little ones.
Describe your writing process or writing schedule.
Payton and I usually set aside time during the weekend, in the mornings to discuss what adventure Payton will go on next. The stories are based on our actual travels so we always begin with a fun conversation about what we did on our trip and where we went. We develop and outline based on this conversation and then begin to research information about what we have outlined to make sure our information is as accurate as possible. I generally write at least 1 hour a day. This usually occurs when all of the kids have gone to bed. I encourage Payton to write short stories at least once a week about fun subjects to keep her interested.
Who is your favorite black author and how has that author inspired your writing journey?
I have two favorite black authors. The first is Crystal Swain-Bates. She has taught me how to correctly write and market children's books. Without her guidance, I definitely don't think I would have been as successful as I am. My second favorite black author is Denene Millner. I admire all of her accomplishments. I love her website, her imprint, Denene Millner Books, and I hope to have my books adapted for television as well.
What words of advice do you have for aspiring authors?
Just Write! Don't overthink this process. It's not easy but once you have your words on paper, it becomes real.
Never be afraid to ask questions. There are so many people that are willing to help you. All you have to do is ask.
Keep Going! Sometimes the process is frustrating. Take a short minute to overcome the frustration and continue on your journey. It will be worth it in the end. I promise!
What has been the most challenging part of the writing or publishing journey?
Marketing. I love to write! Marketing is not my favorite thing to do but it is definitely an important and required part of the business. I'm still learning, but it becomes easier over time.
What is next on your journey and how can we support your book?
